Keep your eyes open

Keep your eyes open

Verse 1

Like a baby’s 1st step I have to learn to stand on my own/ it’s rough road

ahead but no one else can handle it for him/ where I’m planning to go, is like

an initiation school you go as a boy you come back as a man and you’ve

grown/ I’m like an athlete on this song and I have a baton/ running along/

and after this song I’m passing it on/ king of my destiny back on the thrown/

to move you like the booth is my cockpit and ya’ll are passengers on/

A disaster is born in the form of this rap song/ I plan to reign a lot longer

than a hazardous storm/ this is more than a career it’s a calling, and I’ve

answered the phone/ it’s cast and stone/ my poems are in a class of their

own/ and you can tell when i speak that I have grown/ this has become

way beyond beats and rap poems/ to stand on my own I needed a

back bone/ on the real, I’m just tryina reap what I have sown/

Verse 2

Like sight to the blind I’m just taking what’s rightfully mine/ I’m like a miner

who keeping every diamond he finds/ why get the smallest piece when I’m

the one whose writing the rhymes?/ I might not get a piece at all but I’ve

decided it’s fine/ it beats being the chef and not getting to eat/ it beats being

the best and what you getting is cheap/ I’d rather be at a desk and not even

emcee/ at least I’d be receiving a check at the end of the week/ I’m just

tryina get a bigger piece of my own cake/ make my own decisions, release

on my own date/ you know, charge my own fees when I’m on stage/ I’m

just tryina live off royalties when I’m on stage/ cause I believe I’ve paid

dues/ and now I’m tryina make moves/ I’m like a puppet with a pair of

scissors tryina break loose/ I’m tryina make music/ not be a slave to it/

I know my worth is more that 40 acres and a mule kid/

I love what I do, I love this music business. But ever so often I have

to remind myself that it’s exactly that business, and until I know the

business part of it, like a lot of musicians i’m gonna die a pooper.

Verse 3

Cuase on the real I’m concerned about all that/ this industry is hot and ]

you’ll burn till you’ve gone black/ I’ve only figured out my worth and I’ve

gone back/ to try and renegotiate the terms of my contract/ I love writing

rhymes recording/  love being at a live performance/ making the crowd

recite the chorus/ but also wanna be secure when I retire like Jordan/

I love this music but I don’t wanna die a pooper/ and that’s why I’m tryna

get my business staright/ my future’s determined by the descisions I make/

and you’ll realize whenn you listen to this tape/ that I’m only tryina learn from

the mistakes previous musicians made/ that it’s a business not just hooks

rhymes and vocals/ industry crooks are capitalizing on hopefuls/ and I

refuse not to know what’s mine that is so true/ not when there are so many

books at my disposal/

Hook

Keep your eyes open watch and learn/ listen to what I’ve spoken if not

you’ll burn/ stay in it cause you love it do not be turned/ into a money

making puppet get what you’ve earned.
